FC United ease past Harrogate Town

FC United of Manchester 4-0 Harrogate Town

On a freezing afternoon at Bower Fold, 903 fans braved the conditions to witness this FA Trophy tie – yet only one side decided to turn up.

FC United captain Dean Scott opened the scoring just minutes into the game with a quite stunning effort. An attempted tackle turned into a shot on goal, looping over Phil Barnes from 40 yards out.

From then on, it was one-way traffic in favour of the home side. FC were awarded a penalty 20 minutes in which was dispatched into the left corner of the goal by Scott for his second.

Matt Wolfenden all but sealed the win for Karl Marginson’s on the stroke of half time, latching on the end of a great cross from the right.

Harrogate continued to struggle combating the Manchester outfit down the right side, with Craig Lindfield and Scott causing plenty of problems via crosses throughout.

It was ‘goodnight Vienna’ late on: Greg Daniels firing home from the edge of the penalty area – leaving the Harrogate fans to sing “this is embarrassing” as the Conference North club saw themselves on the wrong end of this well deserved cup upset.

United sprung what is possibly the sides performance of the season (combined with a rare impressive performance by the match officials), but this encounter will solely be remembered by all in attendance for Dean Scott’s sensational opening goal.

Draw for the FA Trophy 2nd Round Proper [last 32] will take place on Monday.
